Introducing Optional Paying Services at Bwaila Hospital

Status · Progress

Thematic area

Enhanced Public Sector Performance

Enhanced Public Sector Performance

Justification

Justification

Lilongwe District Council health sector outcomes remain challenging. One reason is that healthcare resources are inadequate to support the effective delivery of health services. Bwaila Hospital serves a total population of approximately 3 million and receives an average of horizontal funding (other recurrent transactions) amounting to at least MK100 million every month. At the same time, the vertical funding for specific intervention amounts to at least MK50 million. These funds are not enough to cover operational costs such as feeding the patients, public utilities, and fuel for ambulatory services.
