Human Capital Development

Justification

Justification

The Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector remains central to Malawi’s socio-economic development, public health, and environmental sustainability, as emphasized in national development frameworks such as Malawi 2063, the Malawi 2063 First Ten-Year Implementation Plan (MIP-1), and the National Water Policy (2023). According to the 2024 Demographic and Health Survey, approximately 73% of Malawi’s population has access to at least basic drinking water services. However, only 18.7% have access to safely managed drinking water. Access to safely managed services is particularly low in rural areas, where 84% of the population lives.
