agricultural productivity and commercialization

Justification

Justification

Agriculture and fisheries remains the major employer of economically active population in the district estimated at 85%, and poverty levels have remained high at 63.5% due to low output from agriculture exacerbated by low input use and uptake of improved technologies, poor prices of commodities on the markets and inadequate extension services. Therefore, strengthening smallholder farmer cooperatives will play a facilitatory role for farmers to access production inputs, markets, and access extension services leading to enhanced productivity and income. It is necessary to shift agriculture in Machinga from subsistence-oriented production to market-driven and value-oriented agriculture, by strengthening market linkages, promoting farmer aggregation, and improving coordination along key value chains. This will enhance farmers’ access to profitable markets, reduce transaction costs, and improve income levels.
