Justification
Most of households in the district use charcoal or firewood for cooking and heating, making the district one of the most biomass energy - dependent districts in the Malawi. Unfortunately, district’s demand for charcoal and firewood is increasing faster than the adoption of alternative energy sources. This is causing depletion of indigenous forests with serious potential impact on resilience to the impact on climate change, poverty and environmental degradation leading increased vulnerability of communities to disasters in the district. Besides the council implementing various interventions in regard to promotion of resilience, this reform area seeks to promote community led sustained interventions against social and climate shocks.
Expected outcomes
Improved Natural disaster and climate adversities preparedness (Deforestation and forest degradation reduced, and increased forest cover and restoration of forest degraded areas.)
